The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation that enforces all rail safety regulations. Any passenger or freight rail travel in the United States is subject to following the regulations set forth by the FRA.
The FRA requires that all employees comply with the federal drug and alcohol testing. FRA employees in possession of alcohol or illegal drugs while performing service or on duty are within violation. Scheduled and random drug tests are administered to FRA employees so that passengers and cargo on railways can travel safely.
Use of illegal drugs is prohibited on and off duty. The most common drugs FRA employees are tested for include: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), and amphetamines.
The general purpose of the FRA program is to prevent accidents and casualties in railroad operations that result from impairment of employees by alcohol and/or drugs.
