The United States Coast Guard (USCG), a division of the United States Armed Forces, is responsible for maritime law enforcement across domestic and international waters. The Coast Guard was started at the request of Alexander Hamilton in August of 1790 with the purpose of collecting customs duties. Today, the USCG serves as a line of defense on the water, serving in every war that has occurred since 1790.
Homeland Security requires drug testing of all Coast Guard employees to ensure safety at sea and promote a drug-free work environment so that passengers and cargo can pass safely through U.S. waterways.
Most often, USCG employees are tested for the following classes of substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), and amphetamines. Testing is to be conducted when applying for a Captain’s license, other merchant mariner credential, upon initial hire, or periodically every two years.
